North of Legacy Bridge in Midway fished really well today. The river is wadable and temperatures are increasing. Fish were occasionally rising to small mayflies, and they were very willing to eat well presented nymphs. A seine sample showed that caddis larva and PMD nymphs were abundant in shallow riffles. However, most of the fish caught today were pulled from deep runs and eddies. Trout were holding in usual places, and we were able to catch fish on larger flies (sizes 12-16) where as before they seemed to be keying in on smaller meals (sizes 16-20). This is a good sign, fish are becoming more and more active, and their feeding habits are similar to how they will be for the majority of the summer.

Flies that worked today:

Two-toned Surveyor (sizes 12-14)
Frenchy (Sizes 14-16)
Splitback PMD emerger (Sizes 16-18)

Flows today were: 360

The middle Provo produced much better results today. Things appear to be picking up each day. Utah fly fishing guides found success on a variety of caddis imitations, and small mayfly emergers. Most of the fish were found holding in the heads and tails of deep runs, and some were holding in mid-depth riffles. Hatches were once again very sparse, which isn’t rare for this time of year. Nymph fishing in Utah has been great lately, and will continue to be. The middle Provo is still flowing at a wadable depth.

Flies that worked today:

Green Rock Worm (pictured on the right)
Green Caddis Larva
Cased Caddis
Splitback PMD emerger
San Jan Worm

Today’s flows were: 340 cfs

Fly fishing in Utah is starting to pick up, good luck on your next trip!

Similar to fishing the lower Provo, success is fair on the middle Provo as well. The river is getting a little more fishing pressure each day, and air temps are looking promising which should increase water temps and fishing success. Flows are also starting to increase with each passing week. Higher flows typically result in fish moving to soft edges and seems that are fishable even when there is too much water to wade. A go-to fly pattern during high flows on most rivers is the San Juan Worm. This proved true today since that was the only pattern that produces any strikes. As fish accustom themselves with the increasing flows, success while fly fishing the middle Provo will improve, it always does!

The fly that worked today was:

San Juan Worm

Today’s flows were: 337 cfs
