Trout Fishing Utah

Once again fish on the Middle Provo were caught not on a solitary fly pattern, but rather an assortment of small nymphs. Caddis, Midge, Mayfly, and Sowbug patterns all caught their fair share of nice brown trout. We fished from 10:00 a.m. until aroung 1:30 this afternoon. We were fishing just below Highway 40 in the Heber Valley. We saw only a handful of fish rise, so we persued fish feeding near the bottom. The major hatch of the day was the fisherman hatch. There were people fishing everywhere, and the best part was that most were still catching fish! The Middle Provo can handle all the fishing presure presented. There are thousands of hungry fish in every mile. Our clients’ experience fly fishing in Utah proved to be outstanding, and once again the Middle Provo did not let us down!

The Middle Provo River here in Utah is a very reliable river that constantly produces fish caught by artificial flies. Like all rivers, some days are more productive than others. On these days the fish appear to be less picky and easier to catch. Other times fishing requires precision and patience, but fish can still be enticed by well fished flies. Today the fish required some patience and well drifted flies. Fish were caught, but our clients were required to pay their dues by casting continuously hoping to pass by a willing fish. With instruction from our guides, our clients hooked a good number of fish, and the river once again yielded its dividends to beginning fishermen. We fished from 11:00 until 3:00 and all four hour fished identically with fish being caught here and there. PMD nymphs and caddis larva imitations were the hot ticket once again. We saw very few fish rise, so we stuck with nymphs for the duration of the outing. Utah Pro Fly Fishing guides had a fun group of fishers, and everyone enjoyed their time on the river.

The Middle Provo is still fishing fantastically! Today Utah fly fishing guides took their client to the river from 7:30 until 11:30, and all but one of the fish caught were caught on cased caddis patterns. A storm was moving in on us, but the morning remained pleasant while we were there. We only saw a few fish rise all morning, but the subsurface action was great. We nymphed deep in runs and pools, and there were plenty of willing fish that made the morning enjoyable. We decided to leave at just the right time. Around 11:30 the wind really picked up and rain started to fall. The storm continued until around 4:00 in the afternoon, so it was a good choice not to try and wait out this storm. Be prepared for rainy weather throughout the month of August.

Today we fished the Middle Provo from 6:30 this morning until 11:30. We caught a few fish early by nymphing, and right around eight o’clock the sun came direclty into contact with the water’s surface and things picked up from there. From eight to nine we caught a good number of fish nymphing cased caddis patterns. Around nine there was a good number of fish rising to egg laying caddis adults. We switched to dries and proceeded to catch fish on top until eleven when everything seemed to shut down. We fished our dry fly caddis imitations dead drift, skittering, and on the swing, all of which caught fish. Trout were actively persuing caddis adults and many of our takes were explosive and extra aggressive. It was a very fun and productive morning.

The Weber river is a popular place for Utah fly fishing guides to take their clients. It is a pleasant river that fishes well, and is home to some very large feisty fish. Today we followed suit and took a group of five to the Weber for a morning of fly fishing. We arrived at the river around 9:00 a.m. and things started out a little slow. As the morning progressed fish began to be caught, and smiles began to appear. There wasn’t a single dominant fly today. It was one of those days that almost every fish took a different fly. This is a good sign that the fish in the Weber are hungry and prefer a good drifted fly over the perfect imitation. When we left the river around 2:00 p.m. the fish were still biting. We fished near Wanship in the artificial only section. This section between Rockport and Echo reservoirs is a well known stretch of river so get there early to beat the angler hatch!

Fly fishing on the Middle Provo continues to produce fish caught on PMD nymphs. Most patterns fished in sizes 14 through 18 that resemble mature PMD nymphs (dark wingcase) are catching fish. Trout are feeding steadily throughout the day, and are willing to hit a well drifted nymph. All water types are producing fish, but larger fish are often hiding in deep pockets, or along deep seems where the current is not to swift. As summer rolls along fish seek out cooler water temps where they can rest from exhaustive swimming routines. Look for them in deep water that is not moving too swiftly, but not entirely devoid of some food carrying current. As insects become more active during the day, trout of all sizes will search out food more aggressively. At these times trout can be caught in riffles, runs, and pools. In other words don’t get stuck only fishing deep pools because large trout often move into other water types to feed.

The Weber River below Echo Reservoir is currently running high and a little off color. Nothing unusual for this time of year, but because of these conditions trout are holding in slow to medium currents near the shore where they can escape the swift moving water. Today we fished from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.. In the morning we had a lot of luck nymph fishing with cased caddis patterns, Rainbow Warriors, and Sow Bugs. In the afternoon Rainbow Warriors and Sow Bugs dominated until around 6 when we switched to dry flies.
PMDs were hatching in the evening and trout were readily taking well drifted PMD dries. Today was a warn, rainy summer day filled with rafters and tubers. There were a lot of people enjoying the river today, but we only saw a few other fishermen. We caught a lot of fish on top and bottom and I would recommend fishing this stretch of river to anyone that is comfortable fishing high water. Utah fly fishing is great this time of year and that includes the Weber River.

The upper Middle Provo near River Road continues to fish well as the summer rolls along. Trout are aggressively feeding on subsurface food items throughout most of the day, and nymphing continues to be the most productive way to take fish. Surface feeding occurs sporadically during daylight hours and a variety of mayfly and caddis dry flies should be carried along so you are ready to match any hatch that may occur while you are on the river. Caddis dry flies (Sizes 16-18) have been working in the morning and evening, and PMDs (Size 16) continue to hatch in the late morning and afternoon. Trout on the Middle Provo can be very picky so be prepared to change flies quickly until you find what the fish are focusing on.

The Middle Provo is still fishing well, and today the fly pattern of choice proved to be the cased caddis (pictured above). From around 10:00 until 2:30 the fishing was good. There were no hatches during this time of day, but a few fish were seen rising to adult caddis skittering the water’s surface.
