Fly Fish Utah- Middle Provo Fishing Good

The Middle Provo River here in Utah is a very reliable river that constantly produces fish caught by artificial flies. Like all rivers, some days are more productive than others. On these days the fish appear to be less picky and easier to catch. Other times fishing requires precision and patience, but fish can still be enticed by well fished flies. Today the fish required some patience and well drifted flies. Fish were caught, but our clients were required to pay their dues by casting continuously hoping to pass by a willing fish. With instruction from our guides, our clients hooked a good number of fish, and the river once again yielded its dividends to beginning fishermen. We fished from 11:00 until 3:00 and all four hour fished identically with fish being caught here and there. PMD nymphs and caddis larva imitations were the hot ticket once again. We saw very few fish rise, so we stuck with nymphs for the duration of the outing. Utah Pro Fly Fishing guides had a fun group of fishers, and everyone enjoyed their time on the river.

Fly Fish Utah- Upper Middle Provo

The upper Middle Provo near River Road continues to fish well as the summer rolls along. Trout are aggressively feeding on subsurface food items throughout most of the day, and nymphing continues to be the most productive way to take fish. Surface feeding occurs sporadically during daylight hours and a variety of mayfly and caddis dry flies should be carried along so you are ready to match any hatch that may occur while you are on the river. Caddis dry flies (Sizes 16-18) have been working in the morning and evening, and PMDs (Size 16) continue to hatch in the late morning and afternoon. Trout on the Middle Provo can be very picky so be prepared to change flies quickly until you find what the fish are focusing on.

Lower Provo Fly Fishing in Utah

Today Utah Pro Fly Fishing Guides were on the river with their clients from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm. The morning fished fair with a handful of average sized fish brought to net. In the afternoon the fishing picked up and some very nice fish were landed. Today the PMD hatch was not as thick as it has been in recent days, but the fish were still feeding heavily below the surface on PMD nymph imitations. Take mind that summer afternoons are full of rafters, tubers, and kayakers, some of which are highly out of control so watch upstream to stay safe. Luckily the fish see enough traffic that it doesn’t affect the fishing. Caddis hatches in the evening are also thickening up so take along your dry fly box for top water action in the evenings.

Fly Fishing Utah Rivers- Middle Provo PMDs

The PMD hatch is in full swing on the middle Provo with strong hatches occurring every day. Depending on the stretch of the river, the hatch occurs at different times. Today we fished above River Road, close to Jordanelle Dam, and the hatch started around 2:30 in the afternoon. The PMD adults are large (sizes 14 and 16) and causing a stir among the trout. Fish can be caught all day long on PMD nymph patterns, and dry fly fishing is the strongest in the afternoon.  Caddis larva and pupa patterns are also working well throughout the day on all stretches of the middle Provo. Caddis adult imitations can be used to take fish in the early evening. Trout love to chase and hammer skittering caddis on the water’s surface so prepare for some very explosive takes! Fly Fish Utah- Stonefly Migration

More and more stonefly exuviae (exoskeletons shed as stonefly nymphs emerge as adults) are appearing along the river’s edge of the middle Provo. Stonefly migrations occur primarily at night and early morning. Large stonefly nymphs will catch fish in the early morning, but strikes will decrease as the trout realize the stonefly migration has ceased until darkness returns. It is still possible to take fish on stonefly nymphs during the day, but early morning and just before night fall is your best bet. Today, Utah Pro Fly Fishing client Robert landed a large whitefish on a giant size 6 golden stone nymph. This is an unusual hook up since whitefish have small mouths and are often missed on the hook set when using large flies. The river is running crystal clear and PMD and caddis hatches are increasing daily. This is a great time of year to be on the river!

Middle Provo Green Drakes

The green drake hatch is in full swing on the middle Provo. These bugs are huge, easy to imitate, and are making all the fish in the river go crazy! Fish started taking adult drakes last week, and continue to do so now. The hatch is strong from Charleston up past Midway, and maybe now even all the way to River Road, although I haven’t fished up there since Saturday and there were no drakes hatching then. Hatches have been strongest from 11:00 am until about 2:00 when they then start to taper off. Green drakes offer such a huge food source for these fish that they are willing to take nymphs in the morning before the hatch, adults, cripples (emergers), and nymphs during the hatch, and nymphs again after it has tapered off, with an occasional fish still looking up and hammering dries into the evening. There is nothing like fishing large flies to large fish, and for the next short while it will continue!

Utah Fly Fishing

Small Flies on the Lower Provo

Today was a lot like yesterday, except it took a little longer for the fishing to heat up. For the first couple of hours we struggled to find the right flies. After we landed our first fish we pumped it’s stomach and realized that anything above a size 18 probably wasn’t going to catch fish. The fish we pumped has a few teeny tiny midge larva and that’s it. We changed accordingly by fishing small midge patterns and small mayfly emerger patterns, all of which caught fish. Long steady drifts were required, but we soon found our rhythm and caught some nice fish. We fished pine run and just below it. There are a lot on nice fish in this section. Today the river was once again not that crowded. We saw a few other groups of people and all appeared to be catching fish and having a good time.

Trout Fishing Utah- Middle Provo Report

Trout fishing in Utah has been great lately, as it was today. We started fishing at about 2:3o this afternoon, and fishing was good clear until 8:00 when we wrapped up our day. Nymph fishing was productive since there were no hatches this afternoon. The day was sunny and bright when we started, but quickly progressed into a thunderstorm. As is often, the fishing actually got better as the weather got worse. There were few people on the river so we had free range of our preferred holes, and we landed some nice browns.

Fly Fish Utah – Middle Provo Report 06/08/10

North of Legacy Bridge in Midway fished really well today. The river is wadable and temperatures are increasing. Fish were occasionally rising to small mayflies, and they were very willing to eat well presented nymphs. A seine sample showed that caddis larva and PMD nymphs were abundant in shallow riffles. However, most of the fish caught today were pulled from deep runs and eddies. Trout were holding in usual places, and we were able to catch fish on larger flies (sizes 12-16) where as before they seemed to be keying in on smaller meals (sizes 16-20). This is a good sign, fish are becoming more and more active, and their feeding habits are similar to how they will be for the majority of the summer.
