The Middle Provo is still fishing fantastically! Today Utah fly fishing guides took their client to the river from 7:30 until 11:30, and all but one of the fish caught were caught on cased caddis patterns. A storm was moving in on us, but the morning remained pleasant while we were there. We only saw a few fish rise all morning, but the subsurface action was great. We nymphed deep in runs and pools, and there were plenty of willing fish that made the morning enjoyable. We decided to leave at just the right time. Around 11:30 the wind really picked up and rain started to fall. The storm continued until around 4:00 in the afternoon, so it was a good choice not to try and wait out this storm. Be prepared for rainy weather throughout the month of August.

The PMD hatch is in full swing on the middle Provo with strong hatches occurring every day. Depending on the stretch of the river, the hatch occurs at different times. Today we fished above River Road, close to Jordanelle Dam, and the hatch started around 2:30 in the afternoon. The PMD adults are large (sizes 14 and 16) and causing a stir among the trout. Fish can be caught all day long on PMD nymph patterns, and dry fly fishing is the strongest in the afternoon.  Caddis larva and pupa patterns are also working well throughout the day on all stretches of the middle Provo. Caddis adult imitations can be used to take fish in the early evening. Trout love to chase and hammer skittering caddis on the water’s surface so prepare for some very explosive takes! Fly fishing on Utah rivers is great during the summer months, book your guided trip soon!

The green drake hatch is on at many of Utah’s small streams. Today we fished Current Creek which is located about 45 minutes from Heber City near Strawberry Reservoir. From 9:30 until noon the fishing was slow with only a few willing to take a drake nymph. By noon the drake hatch was on, but as it began, so did the wind. Huge gusts ripped down the canyon which made for difficult casting. We managed to get a few takes on top, but the wind truly made things difficult. We then decided to leave Current Creek and fish the lower Provo to salvage the day and escape the wind. This proved to be a wise decision. From 3:30 Until 7:00 the fish were willing to eat tiny flies like we had hoped. Once again the Green Rock Worm dominated the catch. Our client Greg hooked into a fish of a lifetime (20+ inch rainbow) that fought hard and long just to spit the hook moments before it was to be netted. Fly fishing in Utah is great right now, and it will continue to be for months to come!

The lower Provo is currently fishing great. Our Utah fly fishing guides helped our clients catch fish from 7:00 am until 5:00. Every hour was productive, with a few occasional slow moments spread throughout the day. The average size fish was excellent, and the number of fish caught was high. They fished a standard indicator nymph rig that places their flies deep in the zone of the fish. The lower Provo gets a lot of pressure everyday, so these fish are smart. It is imperative to get perfect drag-free drifts in order catch the larger fish. If you fish the right depth with good drifts and the right flies, there are so many fish in the Lower Provo that you are bound to catch fish.
